Life#
Born in Tripoli (Trablusşam) in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Orthodox Christian (Ortadoks) community, İlyas Raci Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). İlyas Raci had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French and Italian.
Work began in Acre (Akka) in 1876/77, at about 27, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places İlyas Raci in İskenderun as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1883/84. Next came Aleppo in 1884/85, then a return to İskenderun from 1885 to 1894. The last posts were in Aydın in 1894/95 and Alaşehir from 1895 to 1897.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 800 in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Alaşehir, when four in five paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 720 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
