Life#
Dorkani Efendi was born in Edirne in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi).
Dorkani began work in Edirne in 1866/67, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Dorkani in Gelibolu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1871/72. Dorkani then moved to Volos (Golos) from 1872 to 1878, then Çanakkale from 1878 to 1883. Next came Mytilene (Midilli) from 1883 to 1887, with a rise to Sef in 1883/84. From 1887 to 1902 the annual entries place Dorkani in Kavala.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 600 in 1876/77, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Volos, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 34 years of salary come to 222,480 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02; the list of 1902/03 (AH 1320) gives the status word Vefat (death).
