Life#
Mustafa Cevdet Efendi was born in Edirne in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Varna in 1870/71, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Mustafa Cevdet as an official (Memur) in Varna. Next came Ruse (Rusçuk) from 1873 to 1878, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Ermenek, Tarsus and Mersin from 1878 to 1885. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Cevdet to Eleşkirt from 1886 to 1895, then Danismend from 1895 to 1904. The last post was in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) in 1904/05.
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 800 in 1878/79, the peak, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in Ermenek, when two in three paid officials earned less. Over 32 years the salaries add up to 238,680 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1904/05; the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
