Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Edirne in 1848/49 (AH 1265), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Edirne in 1867/68, at about 18, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Hasan Tahsin in Stara Zagora (Eski Zağra) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1870/71. Next came Plovdiv (Filibe) from 1871 to 1873, then Filibepazarcigi from 1873 to 1878. The annual lists then follow Hasan Tahsin to Çatalca in 1878, then back to Edirne, the birthplace, from 1879 to 1882. The last posts were in Feres in 1882/83 and Edirne again from 1883 to 1885.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 600 in 1878, as Muhabere Memuru in Çatalca, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 18 years the salaries add up to 76,200 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1884/85; the list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death).
