Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1848/49 (AH 1265), Ahmed Sadık Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1863/64, Ahmed Sadık began work in Turhal, paid from the start, on 480 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Ahmed Sadık as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Turhal, where the entries run to 1866/67. Next came Ünye, Biga and Mostar from 1867 to 1878, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1868/69 and to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1876/77. The lists have no entry for 1869 to 1876 and 1878 to 1879. From 1879 to 1901 the annual entries place Ahmed Sadık in Pristina (Priştine). Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 39 years or more.
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to a peak of 1,200 in 1876/77, as 1. Müdür in Mostar, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less.
