Life#
Mustafa Tevfik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1833/34 (AH 1249) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1846/47, Mustafa Tevfik began work in the Divan Kalemi in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1847/48, places Mustafa Tevfik in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the Divan Kitabeti, where the entries run to 1850/51. From 1851 to 1891 the annual entries place Mustafa Tevfik in Sadaret, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1861/62 as Telgraf Memuru. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 1 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 45 years or more.
The salary went from 60 kuruş a month in 1847/48 to 1,000 in 1878, the peak, as Telgraf Memuru in Sadaret, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 44 years the salaries add up to 310,956 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1890/91.
