Life#
Abdulkerim Efendi was born in Kosova in 1840/41 (AH 1256), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdulkerim also knew four languages, Turkish in writing, Bosnian in speech and Arabic and Persian a little. Few officials knew Bosnian; only 11 of the 5,211 officials did.
At about 20, in 1860/61, Abdulkerim began work in Novi Pazar (Yenipazar), paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1860/61, with Abdulkerim as an official (Memur) in Novi Pazar, where the entries run to 1887/88, with a rise to Temyiz Mahkemesi Baskitabeti in 1877/78 and to Ceza Dairesi Riyaseti in 1879/80. The last posts were in Pljevlja (Taşlıca) from 1888 to 1890.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to 1,400 in 1879/80, the peak, as Ceza Dairesi Riyaseti in Novi Pazar, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. Over 31 years the salaries add up to 323,112 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. Pay rose to 28 times the first salary; fewer than 3 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The final annual entry is for 1889/90.
