Life#
Hacı Sadık Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 22, in 1872/73, Sadık began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1874/75, with Sadık in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1880/81, with a rise to a post in the Muhasebe Kalemi in 1880/81. Next came Kastamonu from 1881 to 1895, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti). From 1896 to 1907 every annual entry places Sadık in Adana, first as an assistant director (Müdür Muavini), from 1897/98 in the Başmüdür Kitabeti.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to 850 in 1905/06, the peak, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Adana, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 33 years of salary come to 238,200 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
