Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Riza Efendi was the child of an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Riza also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Ali Riza in Damascus (Şam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). For 1871 to 1876 the lists have no entry. Ali Riza then moved to Edirne in 1876/77, and Uzunköprü in 1877/78, as a chief official (Başmemur), then back to Edirne from 1879 to 1886. Next came Keskin in 1886/87, then Ayaş from 1887 to 1894. The annual lists then follow Ali Riza to Ankara, Karadeniz Ereğli and Beypazarı from 1894 to 1901. The last post was in Çorum in 1901/02. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 600 in 1877/78, the peak, as Başmemur in Uzunköprü, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 161,760 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
