Life#
Born in Ürgüp in 1845/46 (AH 1262), İbrahim Hakki Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "evkaf muduru". İbrahim Hakki wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of French.
At about 18, in 1864/65, İbrahim Hakki began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places İbrahim Hakki in Istanbul as Adliye Tahrirat Memuru, where the entries run to 1878/79, with a rise to Bidayet Mahkemesi Savci Muavini in 1878/79. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Hakki to five places in ten years, with a rise to Adliye Mufettisi in 1880/81, then Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1889 to 1896. The last post was in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1896/97. Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 7,000 in 1880/81, the peak, as Adliye Mufettisi in Mosul, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 1,068,000 kuruş, 6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by 31 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1896/97. İbrahim Hakki received a rank (rütbe).
