Life#
Mustafa Şakir Efendi was born in Ürgüp in 1845 (AH 1261) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Samsun in 1868/69, at about 23, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Mustafa Şakir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in İnebolu. Next came Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) from 1874 to 1876, then Giresun from 1876 to 1883. The last posts were in Trabzon from 1883 to 1886 and Görele from 1886 to 1888.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 475 in 1886/87, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Görele, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 16 years the salaries add up to 74,340 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1887/88.
