Armenian Christian (Ermeni). Born in Istanbul (Dersaadet) in 1845/46 (AH 1262). On record 1873 to 1876, 2 annual entries.

Life

Kirkor Yıldızyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took seven years, at the Roma Katolik Mektebi; Kirkor Yıldızyan also attended the telegraph school. Kirkor Yıldızyan knew five languages, Armenian, French, Italian and Turkish in writing and Greek (Rum) a little, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.

Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1866/67, at about 20, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Kirkor Yıldızyan as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Samsun. In 1875/76 the lists place Kirkor Yıldızyan in Bosna, with a rise to Evrak Mudurlu Tercume Memuru.

The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 1,200 in 1875/76, the peak, as Evrak Mudurlu Tercume Memuru in Bosna, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1875/76.
