Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1845 (AH 1261), Ahmet Raif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Subasi". Ahmet Raif had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1865/66, Ahmet Raif began work in Trabzon, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Ahmet Raif as an official (Memur) in Kozan. Next came four places in four years, then a return to Rize from 1871 to 1873. Ahmet Raif then moved to Trabzon in 1873/74, then back to Erzincan from 1874 to 1882. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Raif to four places in eight years, with a rise to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini) in 1885/86 and to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1887/88. The last post was in Trabzon again in 1890/91. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 1,500 in 1887/88, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Adana, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1890/91; the list of 1891/92 (AH 1309) gives the status word Vefat (death).
