Life#
Hüseyin Saik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at the Imperial Palace School (Enderun-ı Hümayun Mektebi).
Hüseyin Saik began work in Istanbul in 1855/56, at about 12, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. From 1868/69 to 1895/96 every annual entry places Hüseyin Saik in Istanbul, the birthplace, with four changes of title, from official (Memur) to accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in 1893/94.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 1,100 in 1888/89, the peak, as a central office official (Merkez Memuru) in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 275,580 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1895/96; the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
