Life#
Born in Yozgat in 1850/51 (AH 1267), Haşim Zihni Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Haşim Zihni had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 19, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Haşim Zihni in Kayseri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Haşim Zihni then moved to Zile from 1876 to 1900, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Merzifon in 1900/01 and Delvine in 1901/02.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 600 in 1876/77, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Zile, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 171,600 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
