Life#
Ramiz Efendi was born in Yozgat in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Ramiz also attended the telegraph school and wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
Ramiz began work in Istanbul in 1872/73, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Ramiz in Boğazlıyan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1878/79. Next came a return to Yozgat, the birthplace, from 1885 to 1889, then Ankara from 1889 to 1894. The annual lists then follow Ramiz to Chania (Hanya), Malviz and Zor from 1894 to 1899, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1896/97. The last posts were in Aleppo (Halep) from 1899 to 1901.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 540 in 1896/97, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Malviz, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
