Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Sabri Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1884/85, Mustafa Sabri began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mustafa Sabri in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1889/90. The last posts were in Söğüt from 1890 to 1893.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 475 in 1890/91, as Muhabere Memuru in Söğüt, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 30,300 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
