Life

Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Sadettin Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Sadettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 18, in 1880/81, Sadettin began work in Üsküdar, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. From 1880/81 to 1908/09 every annual entry places Sadettin in Üsküdar, first as a sergeant (Çavuş), from 1891/92 as a police commissioner, third class (3. Sınıf Polis Komiseri) and from 1908/09 as a police commissioner, second class (2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri).

The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 600 in 1908/09, the peak, as 2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri in Üsküdar, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 153,000 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. Sadettin received a rank (rütbe).
