Life#
Mehmet Nazım Bey was born in Istanbul in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Nazım began work in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1868/69, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 330 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Mehmet Nazım in Mabeyni humayun as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1878. From 1878 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet Nazım in Üsküdar, first as a chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru), from 1888/89 as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür) and from 1901/02 as a director (Müdür).
The salary went from 330 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 1,550 in 1901/02, the peak, as Müdür in Üsküdar, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 37 years of salary come to 499,560 kuruş, 2.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
