Life#
Born in Mosul (Musul) in 1850/51 (AH 1267), Abdülhamit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Musul Vilayeti Meclis-i idaresi azasi". At about 16, in 1867/68, Abdülhamit began work in the Vilayet Meclisi Kalemi in Mosul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Abdülhamit in the Nufus Kalemi in Mosul, the birthplace. Abdülhamit then moved to Suadiye in 1871/72 and Erbil in 1872/73, then back to Mosul from 1873 to 1877. The annual lists then follow Abdülhamit to Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) from 1877 to 1878. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1878 to 1881, with a rise to a post in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti) and to a post in the Bidayet Mahkemesi Kitabeti in 1880/81.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 1,500 in 1880/81, the peak, in the Bidayet Mahkemesi Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1880/81.
