Life#
Born in Nigbolu in 1846/47 (AH 1263) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Şevki Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Şevki began work in Nigbolu in 1865/66, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 160 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Ahmet Şevki as an official (Memur) in Mosul (Musul), where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Van, Erciş, Tercan, Bayburt and Gevaş, five places in 16 years, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1877/78. The last posts were in Kotek from 1892 to 1898, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 160 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 600 in 1892/93, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Kotek, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 31 years of salary come to 151,020 kuruş, 77 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
