Life#
Mustafa Salim Efendi was born in Nigbolu in 1837/38 (AH 1253), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1857/58, Mustafa Salim began work in Ruse (Rusçuk), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1858/59, with Mustafa Salim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ruse. Mustafa Salim then moved to Pleven (Plevne) from 1860 to 1871, then Izmir (İzmir), Vidin and Istanbul from 1871 to 1882, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1873/74. The lists have no entry for 1877 to 1880. Next came Isparta from 1882 to 1888, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Lasid from 1888 to 1892.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1858/59 to a peak of 1,200 in 1864/65, as 1. Müdür in Pleven, when 69 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 30 years of salary come to 329,400 kuruş, 1.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1891/92, the list of 1892/93 (AH 1310) gives the status word Vefat (death).
