Life#
Born in Pomorie (Ahyolu) in 1846/47 (AH 1263), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Pomorie in 1866/67, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Ali Rıza in Sliven (İslimiye) as an official (Memur). Next came a return to Pomorie, the birthplace, from 1871 to 1878, then Istanbul in 1880/81 and Baalbek in 1892/93. The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza to Ma'an (Maan) from 1893 to 1898, then four places in ten years. The last posts were in Ertugrul from 1909 to 1911. Sana'a, about 3,400 km from Pomorie, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 30 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials. Ten places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 3,000 in 1902/03, as Sancak Muhasebecisi in Asir, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1910/11. Ali Rıza received a rank (rütbe).
