Life#
Born in Cide in 1885/86 (AH 1303), Mustafa Rasim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Rasim also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Cide in 1903/04, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1908/09, every annual entry places Mustafa Rasim in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Jeddah (Cidde). The farthest post, Jeddah, lay about 2,350 km from Cide, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Jeddah, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 9,600 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
