Life#
Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1891/92 (AH 1309), Mehmet Sadettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Mehmet Sadettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Mecca (Mekke) in 1903/04, at about 12, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1907/08, places Mehmet Sadettin in Jeddah (Cidde) as Muvakkat Memuru, where the entries run to 1909/10. The last post was in Medina (Medine) in 1910/11.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1907/08 to a peak of 600 in 1910/11, as Muvakkat Memuru in Medina, when 53 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
