Life#
Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1887/88 (AH 1305), Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Tevfik had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1906/07, Tevfik began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1906/07 to 1908/09 places Tevfik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
