Life#
Born in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Zikri Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Mehmet Zikri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1900/01, Mehmet Zikri began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with Mehmet Zikri as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1905/06. The last posts were in Jeddah (Cidde) from 1906 to 1908, with a rise to Kartpostal Memuru.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, as Kartpostal Memuru in Jeddah, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 21,000 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
