Ömer Adil Efendi was born in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Damascus (Şam) in 1904/05, at about 22, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Ömer Adil in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 335 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
