Life#
Zital Hayım Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Zital Hayım also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 16, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1909/10 places Zital Hayım in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a deliverer (Müvezzi), from 1909/10 as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 400 in 1909/10, as Mekâtib Memuru in Istanbul, when one in three paid officials earned less.
