Life

Born in Konya in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Sava Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Sava had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.

Work began in Konya in 1901/02, at about 19, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1907/08 places Sava in Konya, the birthplace, first as a deliverer (Müvezzi), from 1907/08 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).

The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 250 in 1907/08, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Konya, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 13,800 kuruş, 36 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
