Life#
Born in Konya in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Mehmet Esat Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Mehmet Esat had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Bozkır in 1896/97, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with Mehmet Esat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Muğla. The last posts were in Kadınhanı and Karaman from 1901 to 1905 and Bozkır in 1905/06.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 480 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Bozkır, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 25,080 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
