Life#
ALİ RIZA EFENDİ was born in Konya in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); ALİ RIZA also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Mezraa in 1890/91, at about 14, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with ALİ RIZA as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Karaagac. The last posts were in Bozkır in 1900/01 and Beytulharemeyn in 1901/02 and Konya, the birthplace, in 1903/04.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 800 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beytulharemeyn, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less.
