Life#
Born in Konya in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Süleyman Vehbi Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Süleyman Vehbi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1894/95, Süleyman Vehbi began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 310 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Süleyman Vehbi in Çorlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Adana and Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1896 to 1904 and Üsküdar in 1904/05. The lists have no entry for 1897 to 1901.
Pay rose from 310 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Baghdad, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
