Life

Born in Sivas in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Sivas in 1895/96, at about 20, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From 1901/02 to 1905/06 every annual entry places Ali Rıza in Konya, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1905/06 as Role Memuru.

Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as Role Memuru in Konya, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 21,000 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
