Life

AHMET CEMiL EFEndi was born in Istanbul in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); AHMET CEMiL also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

AHMET CEMiL began work in Istanbul in 1902/03, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places AHMET CEMiL in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last post was in Edirne in 1906/07, with a rise to registry clerk (Mukayyit).

Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 220 in 1906/07, as Mukayyit in Edirne, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 3,720 kuruş, 16 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
