Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ömer Fazıl Efendi was the child of a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Ömer Fazıl also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1902/03, Ömer Fazıl began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1905/06 places Ömer Fazıl in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 150 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 5,400 kuruş, 32 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
