Life#
Hafız Mustafa Efendi was born in Çankırı in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mustafa also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Eregli in 1906/07, at about 21, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1906/07, with Mustafa as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru) in Karadeniz Ereğli. The last post was in Zonguldak in 1908/09, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to a peak of 300 in 1908/09, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Zonguldak, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less.
