Life#
Mehmet Nasrettin Efendi was born in Gaza (Gazze) in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mehmet Nasrettin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1906/07, Mehmet Nasrettin began work in Beersheba (Birüssebi), paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1906/07, with Mehmet Nasrettin as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru) in Beersheba, where the entries run to 1908/09. The last posts were in Gaza in 1909/10 and Nablus in 1910/11 and Gaza again in 1911.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to 200 in 1909/10, the peak, as Muharrerat Memuru in Gaza, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 12,600 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1911.
