Life

Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Bursa in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Tahsin also wrote French, Italian and Turkish.

Hasan Tahsin began work in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1902/03, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Hasan Tahsin in Tripoli as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Tripoli, when one in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
