Life#
Mazhar Tevfik Efendi was born in Trikala (Tırhala) in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 16, in 1882/83, Mazhar Tevfik began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mazhar Tevfik in Thessaloniki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Lemnos in 1887/88, then Skopje (Üsküp) from 1888 to 1901. Mazhar Tevfik then moved to Bursa and Lubnan from 1901 to 1904, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1903/04, then Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1904 to 1909. The annual lists then follow Mazhar Tevfik to Kosova in 1909/10, then back to Thessaloniki from 1910 to 1911. The last post was in Kosova again in 1911/12, with a rise to chief director (Başmüdür). Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 2,500 in 1911/12, as Başmüdür in Kosova, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 437,400 kuruş, 2.6 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
