Life#
Arslan Sırrı Efendi was born in Vranje (İvranya) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 13, in 1887/88, Arslan Sırrı began work in Skopje (Üsküp), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Arslan Sırrı in Xanthi (İskeçe) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Skopje from 1891 to 1896, then Kosova from 1896 to 1898. The last posts were in Skopje again from 1898 to 1905.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 500 in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Skopje, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
