Life#
Hacı Mahmut Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mahmut Ziya also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 14, in 1887/88, Mahmut Ziya began work in Mecca (Mekke), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1890/91 to 1892/93 places Mahmut Ziya in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 75 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 175 in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 5,100 kuruş, 28 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
