Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Cafer Sadık Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Cafer Sadık also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 15, in 1888/89, Cafer Sadık began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1890/91 to 1897/98 places Cafer Sadık in the same office, correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 70 in 1894/95, in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Istanbul, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 6,000 kuruş, 12 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
