Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Mustafa Akif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Mustafa Akif had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 180 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Mustafa Akif as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) in Yeni camii postanesi. Mustafa Akif then moved to Yenicami postahenesi in 1872/73, in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi), then back to Yeni camii postanesi from 1873 to 1889. From 1890 to 1907 every annual entry places Mustafa Akif in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the Tahrirat Kalemi, from 1898/99 as a chief official (Başmemur), from 1899/1900 as Sicili Ahval Baskitabeti and from 1901/02 as an examining clerk (Mümeyyiz).
Pay rose from 180 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 1,400 in 1888/89, as Başmemur in Yeni camii postanesi, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 750 kuruş. In all, 36 years of salary come to 302,748 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
