Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1876/77, the official began work in Istanbul, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places the official in Yeni camii postanesi as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), where the entries run to 1888/89. Next came Izmir (İzmir), Beyoğlu and Arnavutkoy from 1889 to 1892, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1889/90, then a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1892 to 1896. The official then moved to Samatya in 1896/97 and Ayasofya in 1897/98. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1898 to 1901.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 550 in 1889/90, as Posta Memuru in Izmir, when 55 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
