Life#
Born in Yenice in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Edib Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Edib had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1882/83, Edib began work in Drama, paid from the start, on 285 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Edib in Drama as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Edib to Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Heraklion (Kandiye) from 1883 to 1890. The last posts were in Thessaloniki again from 1890 to 1895.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 500 in 1889/90, as Muhabere Memuru in Heraklion, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. In all, ten years of salary come to 43,680 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1894/95; the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
