Life#
Born in Ankara in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Servet Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Servet had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi).
Work began in Ankara in 1882/83, at about 21, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Servet as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Ankara, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1892/93, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1885/86. Servet then moved to Gracko from 1894 to 1897, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95. The last posts were in Kalvine from 1897 to 1900.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Gracko, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1899/1900, the list of 1900/01 (AH 1318) gives the status word Vefat (death).
