Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Hasan Tahsin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Enderun-i Humayun Sarracbasisi". Hasan Tahsin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
Work began in Mardin in 1867/68, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Hasan Tahsin in Mardin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1874/75. Next came Ayaş, Yozgat and Kırşehir from 1875 to 1882, then Ankara from 1882 to 1892. The last post was in Istanbul, the birthplace, in 1892/93. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
