Life#
Born in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Ali Rıza Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1882/83, Ali Rıza began work in Izmir (İzmir), with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Ali Rıza in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1896/97. Ali Rıza then moved to Tesalya in 1897/98, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then back to Thessaloniki from 1898 to 1901. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1901 to 1904.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 800 in 1897/98, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Tesalya, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
