Life#
Born in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Ali İlhami Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 21, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Ali İlhami as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Çorlu, where the entries run to 1895/96. Ali İlhami then moved to Gelibolu from 1896 to 1900. The last posts were in Feres (Ferecik) from 1900 to 1903.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 500 in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Feres, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 48,480 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1902/03; the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
